About us

Who are we? We are the Warwick Debating Society; Arguably the Best Society on Campus!

For our Facebook Group with news and discussion, you can click here

We are made up of a people from different levels of experience with debating; from those who have never debated before, to those who participate at World class competitions. Everybody is welcome to come along to our sessions that run two days per week: Wednesday from 4pm – 6pm and Friday from 4pm-6pm in LIB1, ground floor of the library (but check our calendar to be sure). You can join us at anytime throughout the year and participate in several ways; you can speak in a debate, judge others debating or even watch others debate until you build up your confidence to join in with us.

The style of debating we do is British Parliamentary – see the ‘Training’ section for more detail on what this is.

Apart from our sessions we also participate at Inter-Varsity Competitions on most weekends, host our own competitions and also organise Show Debates to which anyone (member or non-member) is welcomes to come along to, watch out speakers and also have the opportunity to express their own views on the topic being debated.

We acknowledge that debating is a skill which is why we provide training to all our members, but these skills are not just used within debates, they are also skills for life!

So why should you get involved?

  • To improve your public speaking and confidence.
  • To develop the ability to think quickly and improvise.
  • To be able to structure complex ideas in an easily accessible way.
  • To learn to express yourself in a way which persuades and influences others.
  • To improve your performance in seminars, essays and presentations.
  • It looks great on a CV.
  • Above all- It’s fun!
